I have owned numerous multi tools in the past, however as yet not really had a use for them. I carried one for adjusting saddles and horse gear whilst on the move for a while but wasn't too happy with them.
In the main they are a collection of unsubstantial miniature tools with way too many ornaments and toys attached to be of use for anything except the most minor of tasks.
When the higher quality tools started to appear they were substantial and chunky again, still with too many unusable tools attached. For a shortwhile it was evident that the multi tool manufacturer's wished to make the largest clunkiest, bulkiest pocket tool available. It was like the mobile phone race with most brands trying to pack the most stuff as possible into a multi tool. It became pretty weird for a period of time.
For kayaking trips I just carried a tiny tool kit with what I figured I needed rather than a bulky tool. It tipped the scales at a very slightly more than a pound but I expected it to get used at least one time on a longer trip. The kit usually consisted of a small short screwdriver, a pair of pliers, some replacement screws, plus some wire. I recently learned about a multi tool that does make sense to carry with me though.
Funnily enough, they had been around for some time but I overlooked them. Some time ago, I had to install a shower attachment but had no tools. In the end I did it with only a can opener and a pair of scissors. I made the decision that this would be a good starting point for making use of my multi tool again. I sorted through the junk drawer and it showed up later that night, I then reminded myself why it ended up there in the first place. Because it was junk.
Bring to the fore the Skeletool from Leatherman Tool group:
At around 5 ounces it could live in my pocket without notice most of the time and it eliminated the need for a couple of items from my tool kit. The brilliant thing is that for the campsite where you may have to repair a gas cooker, a metal buckle on a pack, the zip on a tent, or tighten up a damaged canoe seat; the Skeletool is everything you need without any of the fluff.
To start with the pliers are pretty similar for multi tools. They have incorporated wire cutters and they cut through coat hangers reasonably easily so will cope with the brass wire I carry.
Next the knife, easy open with one hand using a thumb hole. The edge was sharp enough to cut the corner off a piece of paper with no problems.
The screwdriver attachment is supplied with two phillips and a pair of slotted bits. The bits are Leatherman proprietary instead of industry standard, nonetheless they do lock into the unit with a spring clip. The extra one neatly stores in the handle and is a friction fit.
Finally, its well constructed and put together by my standards - I am pretty fussy with stuff like this. I purchased my Leatherman Skeletool at Leatherman Store and they also sell the Leatherman Skeletool CX.
