The song, and We Are the Champions were written because of an event that occurred on the 1977 British Tour. The band had performed a gig at Staffords Bingley Hall and had done the obligatory encore and gone off stage. The crowd stopped clapping and sang You Will Never Walk Alone. Brian May was stunned and said these chant things are in someway connected with that.

The song is just 2 minutes in length and was written by Brian May and obviously sung by Freddie Mercury.

One version was used as the starting track on their 1977 album News of the World. This variation consists of a stamp-stamp-clap-pause beat. The stamping effects were produced by the band overdubbing the sounds of themselves stomping and clapping many times and including delay effects to build a sound like lots of people were taking part. Whenever done live, this version is usually followed by We Are the Champions, another of the albums hits, because they were designed to run together.

The double A side hit number 4 on the USA Billboard singles chart, becoming their second hit in the USA. The song was actually the flip side of We Are the Champions in Britain, though the American record company requested to put the two songs together as a double A side because American radio stations were playing them back to back. This is the reason the songs will often be paired on the radio and at sporting events, where they are frequently played.

Queen also conducted the song with a different arrangement (referred to as the fast version). This features a faster tempo and a full guitar, bass and drums backing track throughout. The band frequently opened their live sets with this version.
