Behavior in general terms could be defined as a set pattern of response towards completely different environments. Though these responses are usually learnt from grown ups, these can be faulty because of positive reinforcements provided by adults unconsciously. When parents are looking forward to the methods of child behavior modification they must understand the causes of some set behavioral patterns.
The very first thing they need to understand is that behavior is learned through observation and experience. Children who are in the age group of 2 to 5 begin copying the adult behavioral patterns. To understand this kind of phenomenon in general terms we just need to be watchful about how a young little girl would try to put her mother's lipstick or a younger boy would roam about in his father's footwear. Aside from these little behavioral patterns, there are a lot of other subtle behavior patterns that the children adopt from their own dad and mom like the way they talk, aggressive behavior patterns and so on. Which occasionally are unwanted. These when not rectified could later on cause behavioral issues.
Most of the times the parents resort to punishing the kid as a tool for child behavior modification, they fail to understand that this is not required if they can rectify the unwanted conduct of the little kid in its early stages.
To modify set behavior patterns the parents initially have to understand the distinction between reacting to the condition and being proactive to the situation and learn how to discipline your child efficiently. Reaction to the situation will include feelings of anger in the form of verbal sarcasm and hitting the kid and even punishment which could be too tough at that moment. This kind of a response can actually leave a scar on the kid's mind forever. Being proactive to the situation will mean disapproving the kid's behavior and helping him understand as to the reason why it has been disapproved.
One other way to modify child behavior problems is the strategy of reward and punishment which could be very helpful in changing the child's behavior when used in the right way. When the kid tries to correct his behavior he needs to be given a positive reward which could be in the form of appreciation, just a little gift or perhaps a pat on the back. This sends the message to the child that a specific behavior is acceptable. While the undesirable behavior could be ignored, verbally not accepted or maybe a little scolding could have the effect but this should follow immediately after the undesirable behavior. This would make the kid understand that that very behavioral pattern is not really acceptable of him.
The parents must also learn to distinguish between the child and his undesirable behavior pattern. While disapproving the unwanted behavior the dad and mom must be very cautious that they do not convey either verbally or in action that they don't love the little kid. This can actually damage the child's self-esteem and instead of improving it will probably make the little kid stubborn. Once the parents are able to easily communicate the disapproval of the behavior and their love for the child, they'll be able to quickly accomplish the task of child behavior modification.
